Prep Guide for a Maternity Session
I Recommend booking the maternity session between weeks 26 and 32 of pregnancy. During this time, the belly is prominently rounded but the expectant mother is still comfortable enough to pose.
Every pregnancy is unique, so emphasize flexibility in scheduling. I encourage clients to book their session when they feel most comfortable and confident. I suggest booking the session at least 4-6 weeks in advance to secure a spot. As a portrait photographer, mom, and teacher, my schedule gets booked rather quickly. I recommend reaching out early enough to have a few dates in mind. Also, pregnancies can be unpredictable and things can change overnight. With ample time for the booked session, there can be tons of flexibility.
When deciding when to schedule your session, keep in mind the weather and time of the year. Maternity sessions are unique because they can really be done any time of the year. There are gorgeous locations throughout the year that can apply to a maternity session-- but keep in mind your preference and comfortability. Traveling and physical comfort also play a major role on the locations chosen. I also offer sessions at my in-home studio. Being indoors makes our options more limited just because of space, but allows for sessions during any type of weather.
When selecting a photographer, look for someone who has a variety of experiences and offers. I love the versatility of photographing maternity because it can be done anywhere, and the photoshoot can vary tremendously depending on the mom-to-be. Communication with the photographer you choose is key. Be sure to express your expectations PRIOR to booking. Browse through their social media and websites to make sure their aesthetic and style mirrors your vision and expectations. Do you want simple, clean, romantic shoot or are you looking for an elegant, extravagant, editorial shoot? Have your vision clear so your photographer can match your needs. If you're having a hard time deciding what type of session you'd like, browse and keep examples to show your photographer. Pinterest and Google would be your best friends! Get inspiration and share with your photographer.
Pregnancy is just the beginning of your maternity. The fun really comes once baby makes their big debut. I suggest booking a session with someone who offers newborn photography as well. Many of these photographers offer great discounts when booking both types of sessions-- I know I do! You want to establish a relationship with someone who is there from the beginning, and selecting a photographer who can be with you for the growth of your family makes a huge difference.
