Welcoming Your New Baby with the Perfect Newborn Session
Bringing a new baby into the world is one of the most beautiful and emotional experiences in life—and capturing those early days is something you’ll treasure forever. But when it comes to newborn photography, you might be wondering:
Should I book a lifestyle session at home, or a posed session in a studio?
Both options create timeless memories, but they offer very different experiences and styles. Here’s what you need to know to choose the right session for your growing family.
Newborn session in studio. All props--headband, wrap, flowers, mini crib-- provided by me!
Lifestyle Newborn session at client's home. For this session, I only brought a basket as a prop. More often than not, I do not bring any props with me.
📷 What Is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
A lifestyle newborn session takes place in the comfort of your own home and focuses on capturing natural, candid moments between your family and your new baby.
Key Features:
- Newborns of any age: since babies are not wrapped, they can be of any age.
- Relaxed, in-home setting: No need to pack up and leave—I'll come to you.
- Family-focused moments: Parents, siblings, and even pets are encouraged to be part of the session.
- Real-life emotion: We document your connection as a family in your real environment.
- Natural wardrobe: Baby wears their own onesies, swaddles, or soft clothing you already love.
- Minimal posing: I’ll guide you gently, but most of the session is led by your baby’s mood.
These sessions are perfect for families who want a more natural, documentary-style look, and a meaningful snapshot of life in those early days at home.
Think cozy snuggles on the couch, kisses in the nursery, and tiny hands wrapped around yours.
🌿 What Is a Studio Newborn Session?
A studio newborn session is styled and posed with all the props and setups provided by me in my cozy Midlothian (Richmond, VA) studio. These sessions are all about baby and the artful details of their brand-new features.
Key Features:
- Professional posing: Your baby will be gently posed in curled, sleepy positions for those timeless shots.
- Younger babies: ideal for babies younger than 2.5 weeks. Since they will be wrapped, they're more flexible in the early days.
- Full access to props: I provide all the wraps, headbands, hats, blankets, and backdrops.
- Controlled environment: My studio is perfectly set up with lighting, warmth, and quiet to keep your baby comfortable.
- Baby-led pacing: We take plenty of breaks for feeding and snuggling—everything moves at baby’s pace.
- Optional parent/sibling shots: We’ll include a mini family session, but the primary focus is your newborn.
Studio sessions are ideal if you love clean, styled portraits and want to create artwork for your walls, albums, or announcements.
Picture sweet sleepy poses, delicate headbands, soft blankets, and serene close-ups of tiny toes and lashes.
✨ Which Newborn Session Should You Choose?
There’s no “better” option—just what’s right for your style, comfort, and vision. If you want to capture the feeling of those days at home, go for a lifestyle session. If you’re drawn to fine art portraits with a polished aesthetic, a studio session is a great choice.
Some families even book both—a lifestyle session to preserve the emotion of home life, and a studio session to create keepsake images for generations.
💛 When to Book Your Newborn Session
It’s best to book your newborn session during your second or early third trimester, so we can plan ahead and make sure your session is reserved. I typically photograph newborns within the first 5–14 days for posed studio sessions, and up to 6 weeks for lifestyle sessions.
