Sunflower Mini Session Prep Guide | Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session
There is something magical about sunflower season. The warm golden blooms, beautiful evening light, and joyful smiles create timeless family photos you'll treasure for years.
To help your session go as smoothly as possible, I've put together this guide with everything you need to know before arriving.
What Should We Wear?
Sunflowers are naturally bright and vibrant, so your clothing should complement them—not compete with them.
Colors That Photograph BeautifullySome of my favorite color combinations include:
- Cream
- Ivory
- White
- Mustard
- Rust
- Burnt orange
- Olive green
- Sage green
- Denim
- Navy blue
- Dusty blue
- Brown
- Camel
- Soft blush
These earthy, warm tones blend beautifully with the golden flowers and create a timeless look.

Coordinate—Don't Match
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same shirt, choose 2–4 coordinating colors and spread them throughout the family.
For example:
Mom: Cream dress
Dad: Navy button-up
Daughter: Rust dress
Son: Denim shirt with khaki shorts
This creates depth and keeps your photos looking natural.
To help keep the focus on your family, I recommend avoiding:
Neon colors
Bright reds
Large logos
Busy patterns
Character clothing
Athletic wear
Matching everyone in solid black
Simple, classic outfits always photograph best.
Dress for the Weather
summers in Chesterfield, virginia can still be quite warm and humid, even during evening sessions!
Choose lightweight, breathable clothing that will keep everyone comfortable, and consider bringing water or drinks to help everyone stay hydrated before and after your session.
Bring Any Special Props
You're welcome to bring a few meaningful items if you'd like them included in your session.
Some ideas include:
- A small quilt or blanket
- A favorite children's book
- A simple basket
- A bouquet
- Baby announcement items
- Ultrasound photos
- Hats
- A small stool for toddlers
Simple props work best and keep the focus on your family.
Expect a Few Bugs
We're photographing in a real sunflower field, which means there may be bees, butterflies, ladybugs, and other friendly insects nearby. The bees are usually busy pollinating the flowers and are not interested in people, but if your family is sensitive to bug bites, applying bug spray before arriving is a great idea.'
Your Session Will Go Quickly
Sunflower Mini Sessions are 15 minutes long, and you'd be surprised how much we can accomplish in that time! We'll move efficiently through several poses, family combinations, and candid moments so you receive a beautiful variety of images. The best thing you can do is arrive ready to go, trust the process, and simply enjoy spending a few minutes together.
Relax—I'll Help With the Rest
One of the biggest questions I hear is:
"What if my kids don't cooperate?"
Don't worry! We'll play games, explore the flowers, laugh together, and capture genuine moments instead of forcing perfect smiles. Some of the sweetest images happen in between the poses.
I Can't Wait to See You!
Sunflower season only lasts for a short time, making these sessions extra special. Thank you for choosing JdB Photography & Design to capture this season of your family's story. I can't wait to create beautiful memories together among the blooms!
See you in the sunflower field!
